You should keep like 10% free, but not because of speed, but your OS should never run out of space. If I had to use a made up number I'd go with _I_'s recommendation, 10% should work as well as anything most of the time without being tempted to waste too much space.

SSD's try to store temporary data and random download files in least-used locations so they can balance the cell usage across the entire drive; otherwise a portion of the drive will age much faster than the rest of it.
